About Toto

Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word which means "all all-encompassing," the group was intent on exploring all styles of music.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made Toto a household name across the globe.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a new album and change their name to a different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. Toto returned for the benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in over 31 year that all of Toto's founding members performed together. In addition to the original members, keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
